Welcome to Digital Media Savvy!

Hello! I hope you are having a lovely day. If you have not yet read the About page on this blog, go ahead and do so now.

I can give you a minute.

........................................

Welcome back! So as you know, this blog is about social and digital media marketing in the context of a business. You won't find the perfect Instagram filter for summer or "25 Tweets to Make You Seem Deep and Introspective." We're all about leveraging social media to build your brand - whether that is your personal professional brand or your up-and-coming business brand. Congrats to you, by the way, for being bold and courageous enough to put your brand out there. Hopefully I can impart some knowledge and share some tools I've found to be successful to help you flourish in the digital media world.

I'm going to be honest with you, this blog came about from a college class assignment. We have to blog and Tweet about the course material, but I thought, why not just make this into full-time blog? In this day and age, we ALL have to be marketers. Maybe my studies and experiences can help someone in the industry. There's no need to patronize you by telling you how rapidly changing technology is, and how the internet greatly impacts business. You know all that. Look at you - you're on a digital platform learning how to use digital platforms for you business. So you don't need to have a degree in strategic communication or marketing. All you really need is a computer or phone and a strong Wi-Fi connection.

Be on the lookout for more posts to come.

How's Your Social (Media) Life?

I don't need to tell you that social media is an integral part of our culture, but with new social platforms popping up every day, I don't know how anyone keeps up with it all! We all know the big players in the game - Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Pinterest, YouTube, but what about WeChat, Viber, Ravelry, Foursquare, Badoo, StumbleUpon, Funny or Die, or DeviantArt? As many niche interests as there are, there are social media platforms for them all. So if social media encompasses many different things - text, pictures, video, music, stories, dating - how do we define what is and what isn't "social media?" Our friend Miriam-Webster defines social media as forms of electronic communication through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content. So a FIFA forum, watching a beauty guru put on makeup, and a dating website for vegetarians are all social media? Yep. But does a business need to be ...

Book Review #2: Digital Leader

I have been going through Erik Qualman’s book Digital Leader: 5 Simple Keys to Success and Influence which means it’s time for another book review. Qualman is also the author of Socialnomics , a keynote speaker and a YouTube content creator, with one his videos grossing over 1,300,000 views. His book Digital Leader reads like a self-help book for companies and individuals. He says we are all leaders who leave behind a digital STAMP in relation to what we accomplish and how we interact with others. STAMP is the acronym that makes up the five simple keys to success and influence, and the letters stand for: Simple: success is the result of simplification and focus True: be true to your passion Act: nothing happens without action–take the first step Map: goals and visions are needed to get where you want to be People: success doesn’t happen alone Once you get past the cheesy poem in Chapter 1, you’ll find some great life advice backed by quotes and examples ...

Book Review: Likeable Social Media

I recently read  Likeable Social Media: How To Delight Your Customers, Create an Irresistible Brand, & Be Generally Amazing On All Social Networks That Matter   by Dave Kerpen. This book offers valuable insight to running social media for a business without talking down to you like you are baby boomer who doesn't know how to use a cell phone. (No offense to baby boomers. They just generally get a bad wrap for not knowing how to use technology, which makes for some pretty funny memes .) Kerpen is an entrepreneur and public speaker who co-founded Likeable Media, a social media and word-of-mouth marketing agency for large businesses and Likeable Local for small business, so he is more than qualified to give advice and best-practices on the subject matter. This book covers a wide range of social media topics, so I won’t go into them all in this review. I highly recommend checking out the book for yourself, but I will be discussing some highlights, takea...
